If winter left your lips dry and chapped, a scrub is a great way to restore them. Just like body scrubs, lip scrubs exfoliate away dry skin. Once the dry skin is removed, lip balm absorbs better. Granulated sugar is the perfect lip exfoliant because it’s gentle but scrubby (and it tastes good if you happen to get some in your mouth).

This Floral Sugar Lip Scrub is a combination of coconut oil, cocoa butter, and rosehip seed oil to create a texture that’s solid at room temperature. It’s quite firm, but softens up when it comes in contact with skin. If you prefer a softer texture, decrease the amount of cocoa butter. A great way to test the formula is with the spoon trick. Rose Gold Mica adds a light pink hue, but does not transfer color to lips. Passionfruit Rose Fragrance and Flavor Oil gives a floral scent.

Shop Our Collection of Floral Fragrances.

To use, apply the scrub to dry, clean lips and scrub away! Wipe or wash away any extra lip scrub on the lips. After using the scrub, apply your favorite lip balm to hydrate. This Kukui Nut Oil Lip Balm would be perfect. Depending on how high you fill each container, this recipe makes about 15 lip scrubs.

What You’ll Need:
About 15 Clear Lip Balm Pots

Click here to add everything you need for this project to your Bramble Berry shopping cart!

ONE: In a small heat-safe bowl or container, add the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and rosehip seed oil. Place the container in the microwave on 30-60 second bursts until the cocoa butter has completely melted. Be careful when removing from the microwave as the container may be hot.

TWO: Add the Passionfruit Rose Fragrance and Flavor Oil into the container and stir in completely. Add the Rose Gold Mica and stir until there are no longer any chunks of mica.

THREE: Add the granulated sugar to the melted oils, and stir to fully incorporate the sugar. The texture of the mixture will thicken.

FOUR: The exact texture of the mixture will depend on how hot it is. If your mixture is extremely hot, the sugar will tend to fall to the bottom. If this is happening, stir the mixture until it cools. The colder the mixture, the more the sugar will suspend throughout the oils. Once it’s a “gloopy” texture (similar to the photo below), transfer the scrub into the lip balm pots. Allow them to fully cool before use. To use, apply the sugar scrub to your lips and exfoliate away! Wipe or wash off any excess sugar scrub on your lips, and apply your favorite lip balm.

Kukui nut oil (pronounced koo-koo-ee) is a luxurious oil that comes from the kukui nut tree. The kukui nut (or candelnut) tree is the state tree of Hawaii, and residents there have used the oil for many years. It’s commonly used in massage and face oils because it’s lightweight and does not leave skin feeling greasy. Learn more about kukui nut oil here.

This simple lip balm combines kukui nut oil with another popular tropical ingredient – coconut oil! A bit of white beeswax gives the lip balm firmness. Depending on how firm you’d like the balm to be, you can increase or decrease the amount of beeswax. Read this post to learn more about creating your own lip balm formulas.

A touch of Coconut Flavor Oil gives the balm a light, tropical scent. If you’re unfamiliar with flavor oils, they are essentially lip safe fragrance oils. Interestingly, they don’t flavor the balm, but instead give it scent. If you’d like to “taste” the balm, you can add a touch of sweetener like Stevia or the Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil. Learn more about using flavor oils here.

ONE: In a small heat safe container, add the kukui nut oil, coconut oil and white beeswax. Place the container in the microwave and heat the balm using 30-60 second bursts until completely melted. Beeswax has a high melting point and can take awhile to fully melt. Because of this, don’t use a glass container with too much head space. The container can actually explode if it gets too hot! Once melted, remove from the microwave carefully, as the container will be very hot.

Orange lipstick has been popular for the past few years, especially during summer. It’s a surprisingly flattering hue for a wide variety of skin tones. These lip tints are made with the vibrant Sunset Orange Mica. It gives a light orange tint that can be built up to a more vibrant color. Scroll down to see the swatches!

The tints are made with coconut oil, organic cocoa butter cubes, white beeswax and avocado oil. It’s a firm texture that glides easily on the lips. I added Pineapple Flavor Oil for a light scent, and a touch of Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil. The pineapple notes smell amazing combined with the chocolatey scent from the cocoa butter cubes.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-59436 size-full aligncenter" src="https://eadn-wc05-18592439.nxedge.io/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Orange-Lip-Balm.jpg" alt="Summer Sunburst Lip Tint DIY // This recipes uses cocoa butter, coconut oil and avocado oil.
Below, you can see how the balm looks on several skin tones. This swatch was built up a few times for a more vibrant color. If you prefer a softer color, you can use a lighter application. I used the Lip Balm Pouring Tray in this tutorial because the recipe creates a lot of balm. Rather than pouring the mixture into each tube one by one, the Lip Balm Pouring Tray makes it easy to fill up plenty of tubes at a time. You can see the tray in action in this Making Lip Balm video.

PREP TRAY: If using the Lip Balm Pouring Tray, insert the lip balm tubes into the bottom of the tray. Concentrate all the lip balm tubes into one end. This makes it easy to scrape the lip balm into the cavities if needed. Place a few lip balm tubes at the opposite end to stabilize the tray. To see this tray in action, check out this lip balm video on Soap Queen TV.

ONE: In a small, heat-safe container, add the coconut oil, cocoa butter cubes, white beeswax and avocado oil. Place in the microwave and melt using 30-60 second bursts. Beeswax has a high melting point and takes quite a long time to melt. Be careful – because of the high melting point, the heat-safe container can melt or explode in the microwave if it gets too hot.

TWO: Once everything is completely melted, add the Pineapple Flavor Oil and the Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil and stir to combine.

THREE: Add the Sunset Orange Mica, and stir to combine. Make sure to get rid of any clumps.

FOUR: Once the mixture is completely blended and smooth, begin pouring it into the tubes. If using the tray, don’t worry too much if some of the lip balm doesn’t make it into a tube. It can be scraped off the tray and used later! If necessary, remelt the lip balm in the microwave using 10-20 second bursts.

FIVE: Once all the balm has been poured, allow it to harden for several minutes in the tray. Then, scrape off any lip balm from the tray that did not go into a tube with the white spatula. You can also use a kitchen knife or soap cutter. Place the leftover balm back into the container, remelt and pour it into any empty or partially full lip balm tube.

SIX: If you’d like to give the balms a nice smooth top, turn the heat gun on low and melt the top of the balms for just a second or two. This will also help get rid of the little “dots” in the center of the balms. Allow the lip balms to fully cool and harden, at least 3 hours. Once fully cooled, pull the tubes straight down from the tray. Pulling the tubes out at an angle will damage the top of the balm. If you’re a perfectionist, you can slice the top off the balm and melt the top with the heat gun to make it nice and smooth, as shown in this video.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-59385 size-full" src="https://eadn-wc05-18592439.nxedge.io/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EIGHT-3.jpg" alt="Summer Sunburst Lip Tint DIY // This recipes uses cocoa butter, coconut oil and avocado oil.
Once the balm has cooled, put the caps on and enjoy. If you’re selling this lip balm, check out this post to learn how to correctly label it. We have found this balm has held up well in temperatures around 75 ° F. If you live in an extremely hot climate, store the lip balm in a cool place to prevent it from melting in the tube.

Place in the microwave and melt using 30-60 second bursts. Beeswax has a high melting point, and takes quite a long time to melt. Be careful – because of the high melting point, the heat-safe container can melt or explode in the microwave if it gets too hot.

Once everything is completely melted, add the Pineapple Flavor Oil and the Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil and stir to combine.

Add the Sunset Orange Mica, and stir to combine. If using the tray, don’t worry too much if some of the lip balm doesn’t make it into a tube. It can be scraped off the tray and used later! If necessary, remelt the lip balm in the microwave using 10-20 second bursts.

Once all the balm has been poured, allow it to harden for several minutes in the tray. Then, scrape off any lip balm from the tray that did not go into a tube with the white spatula. You can also use a kitchen knife or soap cutter. Place the leftover balm back into the container, remelt and pour it into any empty, or partially full lip balm tube.

SIX: If you'd like to give the balms a nice smooth top, turn the heat gun on low and melt the top of the balms for just a second or two. This will also help get rid of the little "dots" in the center of the balms. Allow the lip balms to fully cool and harden, at least 3 hours. Once fully cooled, pull the tubes straight down from the tray. Pulling the tubes out at an angle will damage the top of the balm. If you're a perfectionist, you can slice the top off the balm and melt the top with the heat gun to make it nice and smooth.

Once the balm has cooled, put the caps on and enjoy. If you're selling this lip balm, check out this post to learn how to correctly label it. We have found this balm has held up well in temperatures around 75 ° F. If you live in an extremely hot climate, store the lip balm in a cool place to prevent it from melting in the tube.

Summer is the perfect time to try bright makeup colors. If the idea of bright cosmetics makes you feel a little intimated, sheer lip colors are one way to try the look without committing fully. This Neon Pink Lip Tint has a sheer yet buildable color. Use your fingers or a brush to apply a thin layer for a tint of color, or apply more with a lip makeup brush for a more bold look.

I designed this recipe to be simple and easy to make. Avocado oil and cocoa butter are added to moisturize lips, while beeswax gives the tint a solid texture. The tint gets its hot pink hue from Fired Up Fuchsia Colorant. It’s mixed with some of the avocado oil using a Mini White Plastic Mixer. This helps get rid of any clumps and mix in smoothly.

Creating lip products is one of my favorite things to do. They are simple to make, cost less to make than you pay in stores and bonus, are fun and efficacious to use. If you have never made lip products before, it can be tricky to know where to start. There are lots of different ingredients that you can use in your lip products, including various waxes, butters and oils. Luckily, there are no concrete rules to making lip products. It’s all about personal preference, which is why formulating lip recipes is so fun.

Lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick are often made out of similar ingredients, including several kinds of oils and butters. What’s the difference between these terms? Well, it depends on who you ask. Lip balm usually refers to a product with a solid yet spreadable texture. Lip balm may or may not contain color. Lip gloss normally refers to an extremely shiny and soft lip product, with or without color. Lipstick usually refers to an product that is heavily pigmented, with a firmer texture.

Shop natural lip gloss here

There are plenty of other terms used to describe lip products, including lip tints, sheer lipstick, lip butter, lip stains and more. The bottom line is these terms don’t have a concrete definition and mean something different to everybody. If you plan on selling your lip product, consider the amount of color and texture to name appropriately. For example, it wouldn’t make sense to call your product a lip tint if it contains no color.

Now, let’s get started formulating your product! Below are some of the most common lip product ingredients, along with the properties they add to a recipe. Lip products usually only contain oils, waxes and butters. Once water or a water soluble ingredient is introduced, an emulsifier will be needed. When you begin emulsifying water and oils, you’re on your way to creating a lotion. Because lip products do not contain water, a preservative is not necessary. Read more about preservatives in this post.

One of my favorite tricks for formulating lip recipes is the “Frozen Spoon Trick.” This trick is a great way to test the consistency, color and flavor of your balm as you go. Simply place a spoon into the freezer about 30 minutes prior to making you lip product. When you’re ready to test, dip the spoon into the melted mixture. The mixture will quickly harden on the spoon, which allows you to test the lip product on your lips. Then, you can add more oils, color or flavor to your preference. Click here to read more about the spoon trick.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-52439 size-large" src="https://eadn-wc05-18592439.nxedge.io/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/frozenspoontrick-700x350.jpg" alt="Making your own lip products is fun, easy and cost effective.

A good place to start formulating lip balm is one part liquid oil, one part wax and one part butter. I have found this ratio usually leads to a firm yet spreadable balm. Of course keep in mind that butters, oils and waxes all have slightly properties. For example, adding one part beeswax will lead to a firmer balm than one part cera bellina wax. Check out the Making Lip Balm Soap Queen TV video, and then learn more about different wax, butter and liquid oil options below!

Butters
Various butters are great for adding firmness to lip balm recipes, as well as skin-loving properties. Solid at room temperature, many butters make great balms on their own, including avocado butter, mango butter and shea butter. In general, butters do not add as much firmness to lip products as waxes. When working with butters, you may want to temper the product to avoid graininess and to keep the butters smooth. Tempering involves heating butters and maintaining a high heat for a prolonged amount of time, about one hour. The product is then rapidly cooled, which results in a smoother butter. For more information on tempering butters, check out this blog post.

Avocado Butter: Manufactured by the fruit of the avocado tree, avocado is a soft and creamy butter. It can be used straight for a soft balm. Avocado butter is a great substitute for shea butter. Find it in the Winter Lip Balm recipe.

Cocoa Butter: Obtained from cocoa beans, cocoa butter has a wonderful chocolate-y aroma. It also has a slight neutral beige color. If you prefer a milder scent and color, try deodorized cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is a good substitute to beeswax if you’re looking to create a vegan product. It’s fantastic for creating a barrier to help retain moisture in the skin. Click here to read more about cocoa butter. Find it in the Vanilla Latte Lip Balm recipe.

Mango Butter: Mango butter has a medium firmness; not too soft and not too hard. It’s softer than cocoa butter, but firmer than avocado and shea butter. It’s soft to the touch and melts when it comes in contact with skin. It can be used alone as a lip balm if you prefer a firm product.

Shea Butter: Soft and creamy, shea butter adds a mild firmness to lip products. Shea butter melts on contact with the skin, making it a popular choice for lip products. Shea butter is a great substitute for avocado butter.

Fixed Oils + Vitamin E Oil
Just about any fixed liquid oil can be used in lip product recipes, and many of them will behave very similarly. When adding fixed oils, keep in mind some contain a strong odor or color. For example, tamanu oil is not a popular choice for lip balms because of the dark green color and strong odor.

Avocado Oil: Full of vitamin A, B1 and B2, avocado oil has a lightweight texture and neutral color. It helps give lip products a soft and spreadable feel texture. Find it in the Exfoliating Kisser Scrub recipe.

Castor Oil: Castor oil is thick and rather sticky. It is great for adding shine to lip products. On the lips, it feels rich and smooth. It’s a great choice for lip gloss, or other shiny lip products. Find it in the Rosy Red Lip Gloss recipe.

Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, which gives lip products a slight firmness. Find it in the Shimmery Ski Lip Balm recipe.

Sweet Almond Oil: Full of oleic and linoleic essential fatty acids, sweet almond oil is lightweight liquid oil. It helps give balms a soft and spreadable texture. You can find it in the Making Lip Balm video on Soap Queen TV.

Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E oil is great for adding skin-loving benefits to your balm. It also has a thick consistency (similar to castor oil) and adds a small amount of shine to your product. Find it in the Honey Kisses Sheer Lipstick recipe.

Waxes
Waxes are great for giving lip products firmness. In general, a little goes a long way. Waxes have a higher melting point than most butters, which makes them a great addition if you need a heat resistant product. Be careful when melting down wax. Because it has a high melting point the container may become very hot and even explode. Many crafters like to use a double boiler when melting wax. Too much wax can cause your lip product to not spread as easily, or sit on top of the lips and not absorb.

Beeswax (White and Yellow): Beeswax gives great firmness to lip products. Beeswax comes in two varieties, white and yellow. Yellow beeswax usually refers to a wax that has been fully refined, but not bleached. Yellow beeswax contains a natural smoky scent. White beeswax has been fully refined and bleached. This process results in a white color without the deep scent of yellow beeswax. Click here for more information on beeswax, including how to use it in other bath and beauty projects.

Cera Bellina: A hydrophilic derivative of beeswax, cera bellina wax gives lip balms a unique gel-like texture. It provides an incredibly smooth feeling and lots of shine. It’s also a popular choice for thickening lotions.

Candelilla Wax: A very hard wax, candelilla wax gives firmness and shine to lip products. It’s a great substitute for beeswax, especially when formulating a vegan product. Candelilla wax has a more brittle texture than beeswax.

Adding Color & Flavor
Once you have created a lip balm texture that you’re happy with, it’s time to play with color and flavor. Always make sure the colorant and flavor oil you are using are lip safe. The frozen spoon trick is a great way to test color and flavor as you go!

Flavor oils are fragrance oils that are specially formulated for the lips. The general usage rate of Bramble Berry flavor oils in lip balms is 1% to 3% of the total weight of your recipe. Flavor oils are unique in that they don’t actually add “flavor,” but instead give your product a smell. When the smell is combined with a sweetener, the flavor oils tricks your brain into “tasting” the flavor. Some flavor oils are already sweetened, while others are not. If they are not, you can add bleached stevia or Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil. You can also use lip-safe essential oils in your balm, like Peppermint 2nd Distilled Essential Oil and Anise Essential Oil. Click here to read more about using lip flavors and essential oils in your lip balm.

When adding color to your balm, it’s all about personal preference. The key is choosing lip safe colorants. Both micas and pigments can be lip safe. Click here for a list of lip safe colorants. Micas have a finer texture than pigments and oxides, which makes them easier to blend into balm. Micas can be added directly to melted lip balm mixtures. To add pigments into your lip products you may want to have a mini mixer handy to work out any clumps!

When working with micas, keep in mind they also add a hint of shimmer in your product, while pigments do not. Micas tend to add a more sheer color, while pigments give lip products more saturation. For a light tinted product, expect to use about 1 tsp. of mica per ounce of product. See an example in the Creamy Marsala Lip Tints recipe, which uses 1.5 teaspoons of Merlot Sparkle Mica into about 1 ounce of oils. For more saturation, expect to use anywhere from 3 to 6 teaspoons of colorant per ounce of product.

If formulating a lip balm recipe from scratch is a little intimidating, Bramble Berry Lip Balm Base and Nourish Lip Balm Base are here to help. These bases can be melted down and customized with flavor and color. You can also add additional oils, waxes and butters to change the texture to your personal preference. In the Creamy Marsala Lip Tints recipe, argan oil is added to the Nourish Lip Balm Base to create a slightly softer lip product.

Once you’re done making lip balm, it’s time to cleanup. Cleaning waxy and oily containers can be a pain. This is especially true if making a highly pigmented product! For tips on cleaning out your oily and waxy containers, check out the Soap Queen TV video below!

It’s important to keep skin protected from the elements all the time but especially when ski sports are involved (water or snow). In particular, lips can be extra sensitive and require additional TLC. Whether it’s harsh sun or cold winds, this Shimmery Ski Lip Balm hydrates and protects lips. The combination of coconut oil, avocado oil, beeswax and cera bellina wax creates a firm yet spreadable texture. Avocado oil contains natural B vitamins, while white beeswax creates a protecting barrier. If you don’t have white beeswax on hand, yellow beeswax would work as well.

A hint of Peach Shimmer Mica adds a highlighting effect to the balm. If you’d like the balm to leave color on your lips, feel free to add more mica until you get the color you like. The “Spoon Trick” is a great way to test the color and consistency of your balms before pouring. Click here to learn how. While specifically formulated with lips in mind, this product is suitable to use on the body as well!

ONE: In a small heatsafe container, add the coconut oil and avocado oil. If your coconut oil is solid, melt before adding to the container. Then, add the vitamin E oil and stir to combine.

Be careful when removing the container from the microwave, as it may be very hot. Also be sure to use an appropriately sized container for the batch (lots of head space = possibility for overheating and cracking glass heat safe containers).
Remember: if you’re making a body balm but there’s any chance this will go on lips, you need to use a lip safe flavoring or lip safe essential oil.
If you prefer more color and shimmer, feel free to add more until you are happy with the effect. To test the color, try the Spoon Trick! Remember, not all micas are lip safe. Be sure to use a lip safe colorant if using this balm for lips.

FIVE: Once the mica is thoroughly mixed in, check the temperature of the mixture. You don’t want to pour the mixture while it’s too hot, or the mica may sink to the bottom. Once the mixture has cooled to about 130-140 ° F, carefully pour the mixture into the push tubes and allow to fully cool and harden. I found this filled 4 tubes up to the tip top, but this recipe would also comfortably make 5 tubes. Enjoy!

A major ingredient in chocolate, cocoa butter is commonly used in bath and body products due to its skin-loving properties. Because of its hard texture and warm smell, cocoa butter makes a fabulous addition to soap, lip products, body butters and more.

Cocoa butter is available in two varieties: deodorized cocoa butter and non-deodorized. Naturally, cocoa butter has a deep eggshell color and a warm, chocolate smell. Deodorized cocoa butter is deodorized via steam injected into the melted cocoa butter to “drive off” the components which contribute to the odor. The product is then treated with diatomaceous earth (clays) which remove the color agents. The result is a butter that is lighter in smell and color. When deciding between the two, consider how your project will be affected by the color and smell of cocoa butter. Because of its naturally chocolatey scent, cocoa butter can hide some delicate fragrances, so keep that in mind when working with more faint fragrances.

Cocoa butter has a high melting point of approximately 95.0–97.7 °F which makes it brittle at room temperature. When melting cocoa butter for beauty recipes, it’s best to temper it (as you do with chocolate) to prevent crystallization. Cocoa butter tends to crystallize due to its fatty acid profile. Simply put, the fats in cocoa butter melt and solidify at different temperatures, which can lead to fatty acids forming large clumps. To read more about why cocoa butter crystallizes, click here. Tempering the cocoa butter helps ensure your final product (lip butters in particular) is smooth, not grainy. However, in cold process soap, no tempering is needed.

In cold process soap, cocoa butter adds firmness and moisture to the bar. We recommend using cocoa butter at 15% or less; any higher may lead to cracking in the final product. Both palm-free recipes, the Queen of Hearts and Layered Lilac Loofah Cold Process soaps contain cocoa butter to give the bars hardness. In the Espresso Shot Cold Process and Natural Colorant Taiwan Swirl tutorials, cocoa butter is used for moisture and firming abilities.

Top row: Queen of Hearts Cold Process, Espresso Shot Cold Process

Due to its moisturizing abilities, cocoa butter makes a great addition to leave-on body products. Because of its hard texture, cocoa butter is perfect for creating thick-textured body butters and creams. In the Moisturizing Heel Butter, cocoa butter is used to help create a firm yet spreadable texture that’s perfect for cracked, dry heels. Cocoa butter is also used in the Bramble Baby Belly Butter and Everything Balm, two leave-on creams that are both hydrating.

Looking for even more leave-on body products featuring cocoa butter? We’ve got you covered! The Mango Avocado Balmy Salve uses a combination of both hard butters like cocoa butter, and luxurious soft oils such as jojoba oil to create a creamy and skin-loving product. The Soothing Lavender Breast Balm has a similar texture to petroleum jelly, and is scented with soothing Hungarian Lavender Essential Oil. In the Lotion Bar Love tutorial, micas and Summer Fling Fragrance Oil are used to create a lotion bar that’s both colorful and fruity.

Handmade gifts are a special treat during the holidays. Giving someone a gift you worked hard on is a great feeling. Handmade gifts – especially cold process soap – do take time to prepare. That’s why it’s a good idea to get started now. If you need some ideas, there is plenty of Handmade Holiday Gift Inspiration to go around.

Stocking stufffers aren’t just soap, think handmade lip balm too. This throwback episode of Soap Queen TV on How to Make Lip Balm from 2009, includes lip balm and lip stain recipes. It also shows you how to make small and large batches of lip balm.

Bramble Berry also offers Handmade Holiday Kits to make your gift planning easier! You can create bath fizzies and melt and pour, or lotion and sugar scrub that your family and friends will love.

For holiday parties, what’s better to bring than this pink Goat Cheese Beet Dip? It’s full of garlic and goat cheese, and goes perfectly with vegetables. You can freeze your leftover fresh beets to use during the winter, or use canned beets.

All that holiday planning can be tiring. One of my favorite ways to unwind is to curl up with a favorite book. Not only are books relaxing, some are full of solid business information, such as how to manage your time and how to lead a team. My Top 5 Favorite Business Books helped inspire me along the way and keep me on the right path today.

The soap shared on Bramble Berry’s Facebook page is also inspirational, including this week’s Facebook Photo of the Week by Melissa with 3 Sons Soapery. This cold process soap is called Cosmic Whirl, and it’s scented with fresh and fruity Kumquat Fragrance Oil.

Colors really pop in this Cosmic Whirl soap. Purple and blue swirl on a deep black background, while embeds with pink, red and blue hues add some gorgeous detail. If you’d like to learn how to add embeds to your cold process soap, check out this Crisp Anjou Pear Embed Tutorial. Embeds also look great in melt and pour, as seen in the Rainbow Hearts Melt and Pour Tutorial.

Above (clockwise, top left) are Melissa’s Technicolor Dream Soap, Rock God Soap, Rainbow Soap, and Drama Queen Soap.
Creating lip products is a great project for beginners and more experienced crafters alike. The best thing about making your own lip products is the ability to customize everything from the texture, color and moisture. With a wide range of ingredient options, creating the perfect lip balm, lip stick or lip scrub is easy and fun!

Experimenting with lip balm color! This later became the Beautiful Bronze Lip Tint.

If you have never made lip balm before, a great place to start is by using a pre-made base. Both the Lip Balm Base and the Nourish Lip Balm Base are created with hydrating Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Avocado Oil. The difference between the two, is the Nourish Lip Balm Base contains Candelilla Wax, while the Lip Balm Base contains Beeswax.

Candelilla wax is derived from the leaves of the Candelilla shrub which grows in the southwestern United States. Softer than beeswax, Candelilla Wax is perfect for creating soft creamy lip products. If you prefer a harder product, you may prefer the Lip Balm Base which contains beeswax. If using vegan products is important to you, the Nourish Lip Balm Base is a great option.

Both bases are easy to customize by adding additional oils, butters, lip flavors and color. Simply melt down the base, add any additional ingredients and pour! If you’re looking for recipes using lip balm bases, check out the tutorials below!

If you prefer to create your lip balm from scratch, there are a wide variety of oil and butter options. The best lip products contain a mixture of hard and soft oils. When formulating your recipe, The Spoon Trick makes it easy to find the perfect texture before the entire batch of lip product hardens. Simply dip a cold spoon into your melted oils, allow it to quickly harden and voila! You can test your product right away. The Spoon Trick also comes in handy when finding the right hue.
