Made with coffee grounds, coffee butter and coffee oil, this easy scrub is perfect for any coffee-lover. Coffee grounds exfoliate away dead skin, while the coffee oil and coffee butter leave skin feeling smooth. A touch of potassium cocoate prevents an overly-greasy feel.

This scrub can be used with fresh or used coffee grounds. If you add used coffee grounds, make sure they are completely dry to avoid bacterial growth. Any product that contains water needs a preservative to prevent mold. While this scrub is only made with oil and potassium cocoate, the recipe does contain Optiphen because it may come in contact with water in the shower. It can be omitted if you prefer.

Coffee oil is the star of this scrub. It is extracted directly from roasted coffee beans and has a thick texture and dark color. The combination of the coffee oil, coffee butter, and coffee grounds gives the recipe a nice coffee smell. We added a touch of Espresso Fragrance Oil to give the scrub slightly sweeter notes. If you’re using quality, fresh coffee grounds, you may find you don’t need to use any fragrance oil at all.

This scrub is quite “dry,” but leaves behind a light oily-feel on the skin. While the coffee oil is quite dark, the scrub doesn’t leave any color on the skin, thanks to the potassium cocoate. You could also use a liquid soap base if you prefer.

If you’re a coffee lover, this simple soap recipe is for you. It’s made with coffee seed oil, a dark and rich oil extracted from roasted coffee beans. Coffee seed oil has a delicious aroma. This recipe uses only 3% of it, but that’s enough to give it a light color and coffee scent.

The soap also contains used coffee grounds for exfoliation and coffee butter for extra moisture. Fresh grounds can bleed in soap, which is why used grounds are best. The liquid in this recipe is half distilled water and half brewed coffee. If you have never used coffee as the liquid in your soap before, check out our How to Make Coffee Soap post. Feel free to use all distilled water or all coffee if you prefer.

All these amazing coffee ingredients give the bars enough color and scent without any fragrance oil or colorant. That being said, the scent is very light. If you want a stronger coffee scent, Espresso Fragrance Oil would be great in this recipe. It will lightly discolor the soap.

If you’ve never made Cold Process soap before, stop here! I highly recommend checking out our FREE four part SoapQueen.tv series on Cold Process Soapmaking, especially the episode on lye safety. And if you’d rather do some reading, Bramble Berry carries a wide range of books on the topic, including my newest book, Pure Soapmaking. You can also check out the digital downloads for that instant gratification factor.

SAFETY FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices! That means goggles, gloves and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, and other distractions and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your soapmaking space. Always soap in a well-ventilated area.

COFFEE LYE PREP: First, we need to prep the lye solution. For this project, we are using half coffee and half distilled water. Brew the coffee using distilled water. The strength of the coffee is up to you. The stronger it is, the darker your soap batter will be. In this recipe, we brewed enough coffee for the entire recipe (5 ounces) and used a “normal” strength, which resulted in a rich, dark color.

Measure 5 ounces of coffee into the container you use to mix the lye solution. Add 5 ounces of distilled water to the coffee, which needs to cool to room temperature or below before adding the lye. The colder the mixture is when the lye is added, the colder it will be after the lye is added.

Once your liquid is room temperature or below, slowly add the sodium hydroxide lye to the coffee and gently stir until the lye flakes are fully dissolved. The solution will start to darken and smell quite unpleasant. This is normal! Luckily, the scent goes away in the final bars.

ONE: Slowly and carefully add the lye to the water-coffee mixture, and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved. Set aside to cool.

TWO: Fully melt and combine the coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, coffee butter, and coffee oil. Remember to fully melt then mix your entire container of palm oil before portioning. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 130 degrees or below (and are ideally within 10 degrees of each other), add the lye water to the oils, and stick blend until it’s at a thin trace. If you’d like a harder bar of soap that releases faster from the mold, you can add sodium lactate to the cooled lye water. Use 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate per pound of oils. For this recipe, add 2 teaspoons sodium lactate. Stick blend the soap until it’s at a thin trace.

THREE: Continue to stick blend the soap until you reach a medium trace. Medium trace is perfect for suspending the coffee grounds and creating texture on top.

FOUR: Add 2 tablespoons of used coffee grounds to the soap batter and use a whisk to fully incorporate them.

FIVE: Pour the soap batter into the mold. Tap the mold firmly on the counter to get rid of bubbles.

SIX: Use a spoon to mound the soap in the center and create texture. There is no right or wrong way to do this, so have fun with it!

SEVEN: Place coffee beans in the center of the soap down the length of the mold. Gently pressing the beans into the soap will help them stick better. Once you’re happy with the look, spritz the top with 99% isopropyl alcohol to prevent soda ash. Allow the soap to stay in the mold for about two or three days. Unmold, and cut into bars. Use the Crinkle Cutter to achieve the textured cut shown here. Allow the bars to cure for four to six weeks, and enjoy!

Continue to stick blend the soap until you reach a medium trace.

Rich, creamy and decadent, butters are a great addition to a wide variety of projects. They can be used in cold process soap, lip balms, body butters and more. They are solid at room temperature, and have varying textures. If you’re wondering what butter is right for your project, read more about mango, cocoa, coffee, shea and avocado butter below. Keep in mind that choosing a butter depends a lot on personal preference, and how you’d like your finished product to feel.

Before we look at the different kinds of butters, let’s talk about what butters have in common. Butters come from various natural sources, such as fruit trees and kernels. Some butters, such as coffee butter, are a blend of hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenation is the process of adding hydrogen to liquid oils to turn them into a solid. In general, butters are extremely skin loving and add a luxurious feel to products. In cold process soap, butters can contribute to the firmness of the bar. But, using too much butter can inhibit lather, or cause the soap to crack. In general, I like to use butters around 10%-15% or less in my recipes. To read more about various soap making oils and butters, click here.

Some butters are soft and spreadable, while others are hard and brittle. In my opinion, the softest butters are avocado butter and coffee butter. They are soft, spreadable and melt on contact with the skin. Shea butter is slightly firmer, but still soft and spreadable. The two harder butters are mango butter and cocoa butter. Both are more brittle, and need to be chopped rather than scooped. Cocoa butter is much firmer than mango, and is great for adding firmness to cold process soap. Do you have a favorite butter?

Avocado Butter

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-55736 size-full" src="https://eadn-wc05-18592439.nxedge.io/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/AvocadoButter.jpg" alt="Avocado butter is soft and feels amazing on the skin. It’s manufactured from the fruit of the avocado tree, which normally grows in sub-tropical regions. Avocado butter is solid at room temperature, but melts when it comes in contact with skin. Its smooth texture and low melting point makes it easy to spread and whip, making it a great option for soft balms and whipped body butters.

In cold process soap, I recommend using avocado butter up to 12.5% of your recipe (though I tend to use it at more of a 3-5% rate max). Avocado butter will contribute slightly to the firmness of the final bar of soap, but because it’s not an extremely firm butter it does not firm the soap like coconut oil, palm oil, wax or cocoa butter. It also isn’t going to contribute much to lather which is why my preference is to use it at a lower usage rate. It has a shelf life of about 3 years. Check out the recipes below that contain avocado butter for project ideas!

It has a firm and hard texture and can be used to harden soap, lip balm, body butters and more. Cocoa butter has a melting point of approximately 95.0–97.7 °F, and a shelf life of about 1 to 2 years. At room temperature, cocoa butter is extremely hard and brittle, similar to a wax texture. It does not melt on contact with the skin.

Naturally, cocoa butter has a rich aroma, but a majority of this can be removed via steam. This process results in deodorized cocoa butter, which has a lighter smell and color. I love using cocoa butter in my cold process soap when I want to add firmness in addition to skin-loving properties. In particular, it’s a great choice when you’re making a palm-free recipe. It does not contribute much to lather so I recommend using cocoa butter around 15% or less in your cold process recipes. A higher percentage can cause the soap to crack, or feel brittle or waxy. It’s also great when formulating a firm lip product or balm.

Due to its fatty acid profile, it’s best to temper cocoa butter to avoid crystallization when making anything but soap. When the fats in cocoa butter melt and solidify at different temperatures, the fatty acids can from large clumps. This leads the final product to feel grainy. Click here to read more about tempering your butters. It is similar in texture to avocado butter. It has a soft brown color and a rich coffee scent. It’s a blend of hydrogenated vegetable oil and coffee seed oil. It naturally contains .5%-1% caffeine. Coffee butter has a melting point of about 104° F.

Because it’s nice and soft, it’s great for whipped butters. When using coffee butter in your skin care recipes, keep in mind that the natural smell will end up in the final product. If you love all things coffee, this is good news! I used coffee butter in both the Coffee Butter Foot Creme and and the Whipped Coffee Butter Tutorial. The butter adds a soft scent in these recipes, and contributes to a soft and smooth texture. I love the whipped texture of coffee butter so much, I also used it in the Pumpkin Spice Latte Sugar Scrub Soap Queen TV video below.

In cold process soap, I recommend using coffee butter around 3-6% of your recipe. Because of its soft texture, it does not add very much firmness or lathering properties to your recipe. Instead, it adds skin-loving conditioning properties. Coffee butter has a shelf life of about about 1 year.

It is extracted from the fruit kernels of the mango tree, and begins to melt upon contact with the skin. Most mango butter on the market is refined and deodorized to remove scent and color. It has a melting point of about 86° F, and a shelf life of about 1 year.

The medium texture (not too soft, not too hard) makes it a go-to choice for many crafters. In soap, I recommend using it at 15% or less of the total oils in your cold process recipe. When too much is used, it can cause the soap to crack or become brittle. Mango butter contributes a small amount of firmness to soap, but not nearly as much as cocoa butter.

Due to the slightly firm texture of mango butter, I prefer to add it to products in melted form. It’s not the best butter choice if you’d like to whip the butter; I recommend melting it first and whipping it as it cools. Check out the recipes below for mango butter ideas!

Shea Butter

Last but certainly not least is shea butter. Shea butter is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of the karite tree. The shea butter found at Bramble Berry is ultra-refined for a neutral smell and pale color. Shea butter has a softer texture than cocoa and mango butter, but is slightly firmer than avocado and coffee butter. It has a shelf life of about 1 year, and a melting point of about 90° F.

This skin-loving butter is usually used at 15% or less of the total oils in your cold process recipes. It contributes a bit to bar hardness and conditioning properties but does not help with lather. The soft texture makes it great for creating whipped body butters, as shown in the Easy Whipped Shea Butter. It’s also fantastic in lotion and lotion bars. Check out the tutorials below for projects using shea butter.

This Whipped Amber Bronzing Butter is sure to become a summer beauty staple. It’s fluffy, moisturizing *and* sparkly – basically, a trifecta of awesome. First avocado and coffee butters are whipped until smooth. Melted cocoa butter is incorporated, along with a warm and sophisticated scent blend of Amber and Ancient Sedona Fragrance Oil. Once whipped, the butters have a mousse-like texture that spreads easily and absorbs quickly. Tapioca powder is added to help cut the oily feel on the skin.

This whipped body butter contains Copper Sparkle Mica for a slight tint. The amount in the recipe below is great for fair skin, but if you’d like more color feel free to add more! See the bottom of the post for an example of the color. Because it is made of butters, it does have the possibility to melt in high temperatures. I recommend keeping this butter in a cool, dark place and if you ship your products mail order, don’t ship during the summer unless you’re shipping with cool packs. This recipe does not contain any water, which means it does not need a preservative. Click here to learn more about preservatives for bath and beauty products.

ONE: In a heat safe container, add the cocoa butter and melt in the microwave using 1 minute bursts until the butter is liquid. Make sure your container can withstand high heat, as cocoa butter melts around 100 degrees F. Once melted, set aside to cool. Be careful when removing from the microwave, the container will be very hot. If you are working with large chunks of cocoa butter, cut it into small pieces for easier melting.

TWO: In a large mixing bowl, add the avocado and coffee butters. Use a hand mixer (or stand mixer) to whip the butters together until completely smooth. Scrape the edges of the bowl to ensure the entire mixture is incorporated. Continue to whip the mixture on medium for several minutes to ensure a smooth texture.
Store the body butter in a dry, cool place. As the body butter cools, it tends to take on a foamy, lightweight texture similar to mousse. This body butter may begin to melt when exposed to high temperatures (90 ° F or above). Below is an example of what the butter looks like on fair skin. Once worked into the skin and blended, the color lightens. I’ve been wearing it on my legs as a faux-nylon and it gives such a nice shimmer and a hint of color.

If you would like to add a preservative, a .5% usage rate is recommended so as to not over preserve the product.

ONE: In a large mixing bowl, add the Foaming Bath Whip and coffee butter. Use a hand mixer to beat together. Coffee butter not only adds a delicious coffee scent, its smooth texture gives weight and moisture to the scrub.

Turn on the mixer, and blend until the exfoliants are thoroughly incorporated. Walnut shells are finely ground, and give gentle exfoliation. The combination of granulated sugar and walnut shells create a medium exfoliator perfect for removing dead skin from the body, hands, legs and feet. Removing dead skin cells is crucial for moisturizer absorption!
Turn the beater on low, and mix until combined.
It’s hard to deny the ease of making a whipped butter (just three steps in this case!), and you get such a wonderful result. Plus, the combination of the Coffee Butter and Tamanu Oil’s natural fragrances mixed with Vanilla Select Fragrance Oil and Almond Cybilla Fragrance Oil is downright sinful. Use this whipped butter on super dry patches, like elbows and knees, for extra happy skin.

Work this creme into tired feet for an indulgent treat. The addition of beeswax makes for a nice, thick consistency and I like that the Peppermint 2nd Distillation Essential oil seems to give my feet a subtle pick-me-up. Adding Dark Rich Chocolate Fragrance Oil enhances the Coffee Butter’s natural aroma and makes for a delicious and seasonally appropriate scent blend. This creme is great for putting on feet right before bed, and then covering with cotton socks for extra softness in the morning.

TWO: In heat-safe container, combine and melt the E-Wax, Stearic Acid, Beeswax, Coffee Butter and Sunflower Oil. The waxes have high melting point, so be sure your container is appropriately sized for the amount of material it contains, and use caution when removing your container from the microwave. Glass containers can get pretty hot!

Psst…check out the newest addition to the Bramble Berry family of scales, the KD7000!

THREE: In a separate heat-safe container, heat up the distilled water. You’ll want to get the temperature pretty high in order to keep the Beeswax in the oil mixture melted as it emulsifies, so shoot for about 150-155 degrees.

FOUR: Check the temperature of the oil mixture. Stick it in the microwave for a few more seconds if it’s not within 5-10 degrees of your water. Add the oils to the water and stick blend continuously for about 2-3 minutes.

FIVE: You don’t want to add the preservative Optiphen to anything that is over 176 degrees or it will be rendered ineffective (if you’re using another preservative, check the maximum temperature that it can withstand). Once you’ve ensured that the temperature is good to go, add the Optiphen, Dark Rich Chocolate fragrance oil and Peppermint 2nd essential oil and stick blend for another minute or so.

SIX: While it’s still warm, pour the mixture into the jars. Allow it to sit in the jars for about 24 hours before putting the lids on so it has plenty of time to cool (and no condensation forms on the inside of the containers). Enjoy!

Note: I had some bubbles on top of the warm creme when I poured it into the containers. Once the creme had cooled in the containers, I took a disinfected spoon and mixed it up a bit and wound up with the nice, fluffy texture pictured below on top instead of the bubbles.
