Oatmeal baths are known for their soothing properties. These bath salts contain skin-loving ingredients like Epsom salt and oat extract. The recipe is easy to make, so it’s a great gift for the holidays.

First, colloidal oatmeal is added to the Epsom salt and mixed in thoroughly. Then, the liquid ingredients are mixed together and added to the dry. To use, add several tablespoons of the salt mixture directly to hot bath water. It can also be used as a body scrub.

The oat oil in this recipe is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E. It leaves skin feeling moisturized. Oat oil and the 8 oz. Lidded Glass Jars are both part of the new Hygge Collection, which is inspired by the Danish concept of happiness, comfort, and connection. Click here to explore all the new products, including giftable packaging and five new fragrance oils.

If you’d like to give this recipe as a gift, the Oat Bath Salt Labels give the glass jars a finishing touch. The labels can be cut shorter for smaller options like the 4 oz. Lidded Glass Jars or the Plastic Bail Jars. They just need to be printed on a sticky label paper – we like our Waterproof Labels.

What You Need:
1 oz. Oatmeal
0.5 oz. Oat Oil
0.5 oz. Oat Extract
0.5 oz. Oatmeal Milk & Honey Fragrance Oil

Click below to add everything you need for this project to your Bramble Berry shopping cart!

ONE: In a large bowl, mix together 32 ounces of extra fine Epsom salt and 1 ounce of colloidal oatmeal. Use your hands or a whisk to mix and break up the clumps.

TWO: In a separate bowl, add 0.5 ounces of oat oil, 0.5 ounces of Oatmeal Milk and Honey Fragrance Oil, 0.5 ounces of oat extract, and 0.5 ounces of polysorbate 80. Use a spoon to mix together all the ingredients.
NOTE: The polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier that helps the oil mix into the bath water rather than pooling on top. It can be left out of the recipe, but be careful exiting the tub as the oil will make it slippery.

THREE: Pour the oil mixture into the salt mixture. Use your hands or a large spatula to thoroughly mix.

FOUR: Add 1 ounce of oatmeal. We used quick oats, but traditional oatmeal works as well.
NOTE: The oatmeal is more for aesthetic purposes. It can be left out of the recipe if you are concerned with it clogging your drain.

FIVE: Spoon the mixture into jars. To use, add several large tablespoons of the salt into a hot bathtub. It can also be used as a scrub. Enjoy.
NOTE: Because this recipe does not contain water, we did not use a preservative. If you’re concerned with it coming in contact with water, you can use an oil-soluble preservative like Optiphen.

Soaking in a hot bath is a great way to fight the winter chill. These Wild Rose Bath Salts are a simple recipe of Dead Sea salt and pink sea salt, which are known for their skin-loving properties.
The salts are scented with Wild Rose Fragrance Oil, which is a fresh take on a classic rose scent. Pink rose petals and jasmine flowers are mixed into the salt for an elegant appearance. The Wild Rose Fragrance Oil is part of our Modern Floral Collection, which includes four new scents, extracts, dried botanicals, and more. Click here to see all the new products.

If you’re concerned about the flowers clogging your drain, place a spoonful of salt into muslin bags or sealable tea bags before each use. We packaged the salts in glass jars that we found at Ikea and local thrift stores. A classy container is the perfect finishing touch for this recipe.

Lavender is well known for its relaxing smell. It’s no wonder it’s commonly used in products meant to calm and soothe. This Luxurious Lavender Bath Salt recipe is made with Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil. Bulgaria is known for its abundant lavender fields, and for the amazing oil the plants produce. If you’re a fan of lavender, then Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil is sure to be a new favorite.

This recipe uses a combination of Epsom salt and pink sea salts. Interestingly, Epsom salt is not actually a salt at all! Epsom salt is made of hydrated magnesium sulfate. Magnesium and sulfate are known for their hydrating properties, making Epsom salt a popular choice for bath salts.

Pink Himalayan sea salt is a rock salt mined from ancient salt beds within the Himalayan Mountains. Protected from pollution and impurities since its formation 200 million years ago, pink Himalayan salt is believed to be one of the purest forms of salt available. The color of sea salts range from white to a deep shade of pink. This recipe uses two sizes of pink sea salt (medium and coarse) to give texture, but you can use only one size if you prefer.

Sometimes, the easiest way to get ideas is to head outside. Nature is full of beautiful color and scent combinations. Check out the floral tutorials below for inspiration on your next spring project.

Rose Quartz Cold Process Soap
Rose Quartz Fragrance Oil is a new addition to the Bramble Berry line and it’s already an office favorite. It’s a twist on a traditional rose scent with notes of bergamot, orange zest, grapefruit, and sandalwood. The bright citrus and floral notes are a perfect fit for the Rose Quartz Cold Process Soap. It has a simple pink and white swirl design and it’s topped with shimmery Snowflake Sparkle Mica and medium pink sea salt.

Rose Clay and Charcoal Cold Process Soap
This tutorial highlights the versatility of a pink color palette. While the Rose Quartz Cold Process Soap is soft and feminine, the Rose Clay and Charcoal Cold Process Soap is rustic and natural. The base is colored with rose clay and accented with an activated charcoal pencil line, and scented with Rosehip Jasmine Fragrance Oil. Finally, it’s topped with rose petals.

Charcoal and Rose Clay Spa Bar
Rose clay and activated charcoal look great in melt and pour soap as well. The Charcoal and Rose Clay Spa Bar features a layered design and a spa-inspired blend of sandalwood, rose absolute, and red Brazilian mandarin essential oils. The bars also feel luxurious because they’re made with Shea Melt and Pour Base.
Soothing Floral Bath Salts
Bath salts are another way to enjoy a spa experience at home. The Floral Bath Salts also contain rose petals, lavender buds, and calendula, so it feels like you’re bathing in a mountain stream. To ensure the bath smells as good as it looks, the salts have a fresh blend of Orange Blossom Candle and Soap Fragrance Oil and Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil.

There is something so mesmerizing about gemstones and crystals. With their unique shapes and variety of colors, it’s easy to understand why crystal jewelry and home decor has become so popular. Who doesn’t want to surround themselves with sparkly crystals? If you’re a crystal and gemstone lover like me, these Sparkling Bath Crystals are an easy way to incorporate them in the bath.

First, drop fragrance oil onto the extra large bath crystals to give them scent. A bit of Polysorbate 80 helps the mica disperse throughout the tub water more evenly. Then, coat the crystals lightly in micas and glitter. This project can be customized with any skin-safe fragrance oil and mica of your choice. This tutorial used Celestial Waters Fragrance Oil and Queen’s Purple Mica for an amethyst effect. The other colors shown were created with Shamrock Green Mica scented with Clover & Aloe Fragrance Oil, Rose Gold Mica scented with Rosehip Jasmine Fragrance Oil and Caribbean Blue Mica scented with Rain Cybilla Fragrance Oil.

I do recommend using micas for this project and not oxides and pigments. The particles of oxides and pigments are larger and won’t coat the salts as nicely. They also won’t look very nice in your tub water! In our tests, we found these salts did give a light ring of colorant around the tub without Polysorbate 80. The cleaner your bath tub, the less color will transfer. Also, use less mica rather than more to help avoid any extreme color transfer. Add just enough to cover the crystals. See how these crystals affect bath water with and without Polysorbate 80 at the bottom of this post.

The salts can also be used as potpourri. If you’re not adding them to your bath water, feel free to heavily scent them. Then place them in a glass container to showcase the colorful crystals. I also recommend some gloves for this project. Mixing the ingredients with your hands works so much better than a spoon, and helps avoid any irritation.

ONE: Place the Extra Large Bath Crystals into a glass fragrance oil safe container. Using a dropper, add drops of the Celestial Waters Fragrance Oil onto the salts, while using your hands or spoon to mix the salt and fragrance oil together. Continue dropping the oil into the salts in various areas to help evenly coat the salt. If you’re using your hands to mix your salts (which I found to be the easiest method of mixing) I recommend wearing gloves. Using another dropper, add the Polysorbate 80 to the salts in various areas while mixing.

TWO: Once all the fragrance oil and Polysorbate 80 has been added, continue to mix the ingredients into the salts for about a minute or two to help all the salt come in contact with the oil.

THREE: Once the salts have been thoroughly mixed, sprinkle a very small amount of the Queen’s Purple Mica onto the salts and use your hands or spoon to begin mixing in the salts. Remember, you can always add more mica, so start with a small amount.

FOUR: Continue mixing until the mica is evenly coated on the salts. Add more mica if you’d like. Because these salts can leave a small ring around the tub due to the mica, I recommend using less rather than more mica. Use your hands to “massage” any salt that has a huge chunks of mica stuck to it.

FIVE: Once you’re happy with the amount of color, sprinkle a bit of the Super Pearly White Mica and thoroughly mix in. The white mica gives the crystals a bit of dimension and extra shine.

SIX: Add a dash of glitter to the salts and mix in. Transfer the salts to a bail jar. Once you’re ready to use, dump a large handful of salts into a very hot bath and enjoy!

Below, you can see the difference between the water with Polysorbate 80 in the salts (shown on the left), and without Polysorbate 80 (on the right). While the salts without Polysorbate 80 do look a little extreme, keep in mind the colorant is dispersed in a much larger amount of water when used in the tub. But, the Polysorbate 80 does help the mica disperse throughout the water nicely!

Once the salts hit the water, the mica blends into the water and the salts turn crystal clear. I love how they look once in the water…it’s like they transform into ice crystals! The photo below is the crystals colored with Rose Gold Mica. The photo doesn’t do justice to how pretty the pink, sparkly water looks!

Using a dropper, add drops of the Celestial Waters Fragrance Oil onto the salts, while using your hands or spoon to mix the salt and fragrance oil together. Continue dropping the oil into the salts in various areas to help evenly coat the salt. If you're using your hands to mix your salts (which I found to be the easiest method of mixing) I recommend wearing gloves. Using another dropper, add the Polysorbate 80 to the salts in various areas while mixing.

Once all the fragrance oil and Polysorbate 80 has been added, continue to mix the ingredients into the salts for about a minute to help all the salt come in contact with the oil.

Once the oil has been thoroughly mixed, sprinkle a very small amount of the Queen’s Purple Mica onto the salts and use your hands or spoon to begin mixing in the salts. Remember, you can always add more mica, so start with a small amount.

Continue mixing until the mica is evenly coated on the salts. Add more mica if you’d like. Because these salts can leave a small ring around the tub due to the mica, I recommend using less rather than more mica. Use your hands to “massage” any salt that has a huge chunks of mica stuck to it.

Once you’re happy with the amount of color, sprinkle a bit of the Super Pearly White Mica and thoroughly mix in. The white mica gives the crystals a bit of dimension and extra shine.

Add a dash of glitter to the salts, and mix in. Transfer the salts to a bail jar. Once you’re ready to use, dump a large handful of salts into a very hot bath and enjoy!

Baking soda is a light, fine white powder. The mineral form of sodium bicarbonate is called nahcolite. The majority of the baking soda in the U.S. comes from the vast trona mines in Green River, Wyoming. What is trona? According to the city of Green River Wyoming, “trona is the raw material which is refined into soda ash. Soda ash, in turn, is used to make glass, paper products, laundry detergents, and many other products. It also is used in the manufacturing of other chemicals, such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium phosphates (detergents).”

Baking soda is often confused with baking powder or washing soda. Baking soda is comprised solely of sodium bicarbonate, while baking powder is a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar. Washing soda, on the other hand, is the salt of carbonic acid and is commonly used as a cleaner. Interestingly, you can create washing soda from baking soda by baking it in the oven, as shown here. Pretty neat, huh?

In terms of bath and beauty DIY, the most common use of baking soda is to create bath fizzies. When sodium bicarbonate and citric acid are combined and introduced to water, they produce the “fizzy” reaction. Additional ingredients can be added to bath fizzies such as cornstarch, clays and oils, but bath fizzies simply are not fizzy without baking soda and citric acid! If you’re looking to create your very own bath fizzies, check out the tutorial below. For even more recipes, browse the Bath Fizzies project category.

Because of its fine and powdery texture, baking soda is great for creating gentle scrubs. In the Sea Clay Dry Salt Scrub and the Cranberry Seed Foot Scrub, sodium bicarbonate is mixed with other exfoliants to create a dry scrub. Dry scrubs are scrubs that do not contain any oils or water. To use, simply apply the scrub to wet skin. Or, create a paste using water or oils immediately before use.

In cold process soap, we did a few tests of adding baking soda to lye water and soap batter. Unfortunately, the baking soda and cold process soap did not work well. Click here to see the experiments (scroll down to the bottom). Fortunately, we found that adding baking soda to rebatch worked wonderfully. In the Soothing Baking Soda Oatmeal Bath Bar, baking soda creates a scrubby bar that gives gentle exfoliation.

With cold weather and stress from the holidays, a hot bath is perfect this time of year. Bath salts can turn a simple soak in the tub into a rejuvenating and relaxing experience. Simply add a scoop to your tub and enjoy!

These Minty Layered Bath Salts add a fresh mint scent to the bath, along with soothing properties from pink sea salt. The combination of baking soda and citric acid add a bit of fizziness similar to a bath bomb.

In addition to pink sea salt, this soak is made of epsom salt which is known for its soothing and moisturizing properties. Extremely fine and jewel-like, epsom salt crystals are great for creating scrubs as well!

What You’ll Need:
2 cups Extra Small Pink Sea Salt
Stir to combine, and use your hands to break up any clumps.

THREE: Add 1 mL Moroccan Mint Fragrance Oil and stir to thoroughly incorporate.

FOUR: Place a small amount of the white mixture into the glass bail jar. Using a squeeze bottle, press the mixture down to create a flat surface. If you don’t have a squeeze bottle, you can also use a small can or your fingers.

FIVE: Place an equal amount of the pink sea salt on top of the epsom salt mixture, and use the squeeze bottle to flatten.

SIX: Repeat this process, alternating between the pink and white salts until the jar is completely full. Once you are ready to use, scoop out several tablespoons of bath salts into hot bath water and enjoy!

Please Note: We’ve read of incidents of recipes containing salt and baking soda exploding and shattering the glass containers they were packed in. We aren’t sure of the cause and have only been able to find anecdotal evidence. However, we thought we should pass along a warning. To play it safe, it may be best to pack this recipe in a plastic bag.
